Podcast Episode - Fat Bear Week 2021: The Big Story

Begun in 2014 as Fat Bear Tuesday, Fat Bear Week is back for 2021 and, as a small consulting firm focused on the human services and courts, Grays Peak Strategies knows our podcast listeners demand the kind of no-holds-barred fat bear analysis that you can’t get anywhere else.

NPR? Can’t both-sides fat bears. The Verge? Fat bears never breakdown. Mental Floss? Never trust a site named after a throwaway Frank Zappa line. Mashable? Baiting clicks is our business model, buddy. And the Wall Street Journal? Get some reporting chops, newbies!

Up Close with This Year’s Fat Bears

Only News from the Peak brings you artist and bear management tech Carl Ramm, who saw many of this year’s contenders in action earlier this year as part of his work at Brooks Camp in Alaska’s Katmai National Park.

On this episode, Carl talks with us about where Fat Bear Week came from and offers ideas about how this year’s voting might go. With more than 600,000 votes in 2020—up from 200,000 the year before—it’s not hard to imagine more than a million people weighing in on this year’s battle to hit the top of the fat bear scale.

We recorded this episode toward the end of the first-ever Fat Bear Junior competition, which pitted spring cubs and yearlings against each other in an unbridled, head-to-head matchups of sheer adorability. At that point the brackets for this year’s competitors hadn’t been announced, but you can find out about them by checking out  the Brooks Live Chat at 4 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, September 27.
